Colonel Adel Marfoua sustained slight injuries when a car exploded as he was passing by in eastern Benghazi, the official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
He said it remain unclear whether the explosion “was intentional or accidental”.
Last week, three people were killed in a car explosion in Benghazi with local authorities saying the incident was caused by a car collision.
Monday’s blast came amid a military campaign launched by Khalifa Haftar, who commands forces loyal to East Libya-based government, to capture the capital Tripoli from the UN-backed government.
